Fetal and Infant Mortality Review
FIMR, or the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review, is a national, evidence-based model proven to reduce stillbirth and infant deaths. It is a community-driven, action-oriented process to review all the circumstances surrounding an infant or fetal loss to identify challenges the family experienced and improve community and health services, systems, and resources.
Who can participate in FIMR?
- Community advocates
- Community and political leaders
- Health care providers & administrators
- Social services agencies
- Family members who have experienced a still birth or infant loss
- Public health workers & administrators
- First responders
- Chamber of Commerce members/business leaders
How FIMR Works
Based on their expertise, FIMR members will participate in one of the FIMR workgroups: either the Case Review Team or the Community Action Group.
The Case Review Team (CRT)
The Case Review Team is the “information processing” group. This is the team that reviews and analyzes medical case extractions and family interviews to develop recommendations as to what services, systems and/or policies should be created or improved.
The Community Action Group (CAG)
The Community Action Group is the “champion for change” that has the political will and resources to develop and implement solutions based on the recommendations from the Case Review Team.
FIMR Is:
- A strategy to close the gap in health disparities at the community level
- A timely and valuable source of information about changing health care systems and how they affect real families trying to access them
- A form of continuous quality improvement that allows communities to assess the performance of systems and the impact of changes in those systems
- A voice for local families who have lost their baby
- A tool that helps local health officials implement policies to safeguard families
- A program endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau
